Meet our people

Suzan Knol Technical specification writer
‘Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding is not just any company’
I completed my mechanical engineering internship at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. When I was asked to stay on, it didn't take me long to decide what I would do.
The products we build are magnificent. I have always dreamt about engineering and stood in awe of the ships that Schelde Marinebouw (as the company was formerly known) constructed.
WITH WHOM DO WE EMBARK ON A JOURNEY
After starting as ILS engineer, I transferred to the position of "Technical specification writer"; a position closer to technology. I am responsible for writing the system specifications that are based on our client's demands and which are subsequently sent to various suppliers. Systems such as bow thrusters or drinking water units, compressors and pumps to name a few. The suppliers send us a quotation for the specifications as given, upon receipt of which I start the process of evaluating the various offers.
Ultimately we decide on a supplier. Our decision is based on a number of criteria. And not on technology alone! I check to see if a system meets the demanded requirements. And whether it has the right capacities and will function under certain specific environmental conditions. A system on board of a ship is affected by very different aspects than if it were on land. Together with my colleagues in the Procurement Department we eventually decide with which supplier we will embark on this journey. This is the start of the Engineering process where it is my role to supply my colleagues with the proper information provided by our supplier. We look to see if the system "fits". This is an extremely challenging process. Everybody needs different information and time plays an important role in the process. I am in regular contact with the supplier and with my internal clients, my colleagues!
PLENTY OF CHALLENGES
The work is challenging and I get to be very closely involved with the technology aspect. Eventually, when the system is complete, I need to verify whether it meets our set of standards, which allows me to further develop my practical skills. My transfer has been very successful. If you ask me, the fact that there are so many different job opportunities available in a company is a big pro. This offers me the chance to grow and develop my skills in various fields. When a ship starts to take form and the production hall is swarming with people, I can really enjoy the fantastic product that we are all building as a team.
