Jeffrey Vader Supervisor Support systems

‘Proud of every vessel that leaves the shipyard’

In the engineering department you work on the first phase of a vessel. You have a direct influence on the product. We are constantly working on new developments. And it shows: in each vessel we use new ideas and applications.
Supervisor Support Systems is a line function within the Engineering department. I manage approx. 25 specialists. They are responsible for designing and drawing pipelines for air and all things liquid, such as oil, cooling water and drinking water. They also write specifications for pumps and valves. The end product that we deliver is a three dimensional model that you can walk through virtually. Personally, I am responsible for making policy, putting improvement plans and work procedures in place and handling staff matters.

 
SPECIAL FEELING

The specialists that I work with all have a mechanical engineering or shipbuilding background with a vocational or Bachelor degree. I myself have a Bachelor degree in mechanical engineering. Until recently, I worked as a production coordinator in the production department. After gaining practical experience, I was offered my present job. I stimulate the engineers to check in on the production department regularly. It is good to see for yourself in real life what you have thought up. You automatically get to see where improvements might be necessary. And once a ship is completely finished you feel a sense of pride. We have put a lot of ourselves into the end product: we designed it, developed it and built it.

 
DYNAMIC WORLD

Shipbuilding is a very dynamic world. It asks a lot from the people that work in it; you have to be just as dynamic and capable of anticipating for the future. And in my line of work this means, for instance, that I must bear in mind that I have colleagues abroad to reckon with. That means that processes have to be organized in such a way that they apply to different production environments. In quality control and process improvement this is a challenge in itself.
