Peter Elve Assisting foreman

‘This is a very humane company’

"I have been working as assisting foreman for two weeks now. It is a fun, new challenge. I was ready for a change; pipefitting had become child's play for me. Now everything is new."

"Apart from a short intermittence, I have worked as a pipefitter at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding for over five years. Basically, in this job what you do is you work on all of the piping systems on board of a ship. You cannot compare this job to working in a chemical plant for instance. Here you need to have a lot of ready knowledge; a ship is a magnificent piece of technology. Once a ship is finished there is a christening ceremony. If you like, you are allowed to attend. At moments like that fill you are filled with pride. At the same time, I can actually enjoy watching a ship sail out of the harbour. That means we can start on a new project."

New challenge

"In my position as assisting foreman it comes in handy that I have practical experience. Now I plan the work for the pipefitters. I make sure they know what to do and that they have the right equipment available for the job. I am responsible for planning and I solve any problems they might encounter. I will be taking an assessment course, which should show in which areas my knowledge and skills are not quite sufficient. At DSNS we can choose from many different courses and educations. You can indicate what you are interested in following. And sometimes you are asked."

Pleasant work climate

"The atmosphere among colleagues is exceptionally good. My co-workers vary quite a bit in age, but I enjoy the diversity. Another extraordinary aspect is that, despite the size of the company, you are never just a number. There is a lot of personal attention. Also, and I find this just as important, DSNS simply is a very good, reliable employer."
