‘No day is the same’

Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding is a company that offers a lot of variety. Steel, electronics, weapon systems, propulsion technology - it's all here. If you are not only interested in technology, but also take a keen interest in people and have a feeling for commercial business, then this is the place to be.

I come across all these aspects in my job. As head of production, I am responsible for the total production process at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, in every sense of the word: with the people and the execution of a project. I liaise with all parties; managers, clients, employees, procurement, engineering, you name it. I have been active in every single production department; I know what it is all about. The best part of the job is the variety. No ship is the same. Everything is catered to the client's wishes. Another thing that we can be proud of is the speed with which we get the job done. From the first part right through to the end delivery, including training the crew, takes us less than two years.

 

PROUD

Of course, you don't necessarily have to have a maritime background to make it at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. Although some interest in technology does help. As the market that we operate in is increasingly pressured, we need to make sure that we stand out. The keyword is innovation. That is why it is important to keep an open mind and dare to welcome new ideas. And a keen interest in people is important too. A ship is built as a team effort. It is paramount that you continue to confer, cooperate and communicate. The great thing about all of this is that a ship actually becomes part of you. It cannot be compared with making 10 radios a day for instance. A ship by the quay, that's something to be proud of.

 

INTERNATIONAL

My colleagues and I have many international contacts. Which is another advantage of working for Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. We regularly meet with guests from abroad, both suppliers and clients. This gives you the opportunity to get acquainted with other cultures, I like that.
